2026-07-26 Coffee Brewing Notes Restructure
What I set out to do
Restructure the old Brewing Method 4-6 note, which mixed a barista anecdote, source material, and interpretation in one file.
What I actually did
Split it per the vault’s type system: the ModCup/Steve anecdote moved to a backdated journal entry (2024-09-05 Coffee at ModCup), and the method itself became a proper atomic note, 4-6 Brewing Method. Also removed the stale “Understanding Brew” line from Brain Dump.
The interesting detour: pressure-testing the claim that balance and strength are “the variables that matter.” Turned out to be false as a statement about coffee (the SCA cupping form scores ~10 attributes) but true as a statement about brewing: at brew time the controllable space collapses to the Brewing Control Chart’s two axes. That insight produced three new atomic notes: Coffee Compounds Extract in Order (the mechanism), Coffee Brewing Control Chart (the model, with the 2023 revision caveat, plus the embedded Lockhart chart from Batali et al. 2020), and Most Cup Character Is Fixed Before Brewing (the synthesized claim explaining why 4:6 resolves to exactly two knobs). Capped it with a Coffee Brewing MOC weaving the four notes together.
What was striking
The best note of the batch came from trying to falsify a tidy summary rather than accepting it. “Balance & strength are what we care about” failed validation, and the corrected version (“they’re what brewing can still change”) is the evergreen claim.
