Citadel Interview & Hiring Process

Process Overview

Timeline

  • Typically 4-5 weeks from start to finish
  • Citadel will accelerate process if competing deadlines exist
  • Process designed to connect candidates with world-class quantitative researchers

Four-Step Process

  1. Initial Screening/Resume Review
  2. Technical Phone/Video Interview (45-60 minutes)
  3. Virtual Onsite Interviews (3-5 rounds, 60 minutes each)
  4. Team Matching & Final Decision

Stage 1: Initial Screening

Format

  • Resume review and initial fit assessment
  • May include recruiter phone screen

Common Questions (Based on Glassdoor Reviews)

  • Academic background discussion
  • Previous experiences and important projects worked on
  • Quantitative methods used in past work
  • Basic programming concepts and fundamental coding principles
  • Simple probability/expected value questions

What They Assess

  • Technical interests
  • Past internship/research experience
  • School projects
  • Reasons for exploring opportunities at Citadel

Stage 2: Technical Phone/Video Interview

Format

  • 45-60 minutes remote interview
  • Video-based (be camera ready)
  • CoderPad link sent prior to interview

Technical Focus Areas

  • Programming skills (Python and C++ core languages, but welcome any)
  • Research ability
  • Data structures/algorithms
  • Problem-solving approach

Question Types

  • Programming: “What is an nlogn sorting algorithm”
  • Statistics: “Assume you want to predict y, you have vectors with your predictors, you know their accuracy, variance, and sample length. How do you combine them to minimize RSE?”
  • Probability: Expected value problems, integration, Markov chains
  • Data Structures: C++ heap implementation, class structure in Python

Behavioral Component

  • Technical interests discussion
  • Past internship experience details
  • School projects explanation
  • Motivation for joining Citadel

Interview Philosophy

  • Not trick questions - want to understand strategy and process
  • Candidates encouraged to explain their approach
  • Collaboration-focused: “If you face a setback, say so! Our culture is built on collaboration”
  • Take time to assess problems before jumping to solutions
  • Ask clarifying questions and take hints if stuck

Stage 3: Virtual Onsite

Format

  • 3-5 interviews of 60 minutes each
  • Usually virtual (may be on-site in some cases)
  • Combination of technical and behavioral assessment

Interview Types

  • Deep Resume Dive: Interviewers want to know details of research and internship experience
  • Technical Coding: LeetCode-style problems (medium difficulty)
  • Statistics/ML Questions:
    • Linear regression details and implementation
    • “Double the data set in a linear regression. What happens to predictors, se’s and so on”
    • P-values, t-values discussion
    • Function approximation methods

Question Examples

  • “LeetCode best time to buy and sell stock”
  • “Asked regression based questions with discussion about p value t values. Then approximating function”
  • Linear algebra problems
  • Hypothesis testing scenarios

Assessment Criteria

  • Technical competency across programming, statistics, and quantitative methods
  • Problem-solving approach and thought process
  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly
  • Collaboration and communication skills
  • Commercial mindset and business impact orientation

Stage 4: Team Matching & Final Decision

Process

  • Hiring managers across teams determine fit within specific teams
  • If multiple teams interested, candidate works with recruiting contact to determine best fit
  • May involve additional conversations with potential team members

Decision Timeline

  • Feedback provided within two weeks of final interviews
  • If offer extended, recruiting team contacts with final details
