Amex Gold Credit Card
Core Value Proposition
The American Express Gold Card (US) is a dining-and-groceries rewards card with a 424/year that can offset most of the fee1. Its value comes from everyday food spend and the Membership Rewards ecosystem, not from travel perks: it omits lounge access and carries only light travel insurance by design1.
Refreshed 30 April 2026 for the card’s 60th anniversary with higher prepaid-hotel earning, Hertz status, and new dining-credit partners, with no fee increase2.

Travel protection
Deliberately lighter than premium cards. The key gap for flight disruptions is no trip cancellation cover. See Airline Cash Compensation for how these stack on top of statutory payouts.

|---|---|---|
| Trip delay | Yes | $300/trip, delay over 12 hrs, 2 claims per 12 months4 |
| Trip cancellation / interruption | No | n/a |
| Baggage insurance | Yes | 500 checked5 |
| Travel accident (AD&D) | Yes | up to $100,000 |
| Global Assist hotline | Yes | assistance only, 100+ miles from home6 |
| Car rental loss & damage | Yes | secondary, up to $50,0007 |
Trip delay — the covered-reason gate
The 12-hr threshold is only half the test; the delay must also stem from one of exactly four covered losses: inclement weather; terrorist action or hijacking; a common carrier’s equipment failure as documented by the carrier; or lost/stolen passports or travel documents4. Crew scheduling, crew time-out, and operational equipment swaps are not listed, so a crew-caused delay only qualifies if a documented mechanical/equipment-failure leg is what pushes the trip past 12 hrs. This is the mirror image of APPR, where crew scheduling is covered and mechanical isn’t — the two regimes rarely pay on the same cause.
Mechanics that matter: coverage is secondary (net out airline vouchers/refunds first), reimburses only actual expenses charged to the card (meals, lodging, toiletries — not the cost of a replacement ticket), the fare must be charged entirely to the card (Amex points/MR ok, airline miles not), and only round-trip travel starting from the city of residence qualifies4. File with AIG: notify within 60 days, submit written proof of loss within 180 days; required docs are a carrier statement confirming the delay, the charge receipt, carrier tickets, and expense receipts4.
Baggage & car rental (quick reference)
Baggage: up to 500 checked per covered person, in excess of the carrier’s own coverage, with a **50,000 for damage/theft, 30 days max; decline the counter CDW and charge the entire rental to the card; excludes vans/trucks over 10,000 lbs, and rentals in Australia, Italy, and New Zealand7.
Charge the entire fare to the card to qualify. The 12-hr threshold means a few-hour same-day rebooking does not trigger the $300.
Purchase protection (shopping)
Separate from travel cover — these apply to physical goods bought on the card, underwritten by AMEX Assurance (not AIG). Both are secondary to any other coverage (homeowner’s/renter’s insurance, manufacturer warranty) and reimburse replacement cost up to the lesser of what you paid or the caps below.
| Benefit | Window | Per item | Per card/yr | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purchase Protection | 90 days from purchase | $10,000 | $50,000 | Damage, theft, or loss8 |
| Extended Warranty | +1 year added to the mfr warranty | $10,000 | $50,000 | Matches original warranty of 5 yrs or less9 |
Purchase Protection covers accidental damage, theft, or loss for 90 days; note the $500 per-event sub-limit for natural-disaster losses, and that it excludes items in a common carrier’s care (so a bag the airline loses is a baggage-insurance claim, not purchase protection), items left unsecured, sports/recreational equipment damaged in play, consumables, and software8. Extended Warranty adds up to one year onto an original manufacturer’s warranty of five years or less, and kicks in even if the manufacturer’s warranty ends early due to bankruptcy9.
Both: notice within 30 days, proof of loss within 60 days, filed at americanexpress.com/onlineclaim; for theft, file a police report first. Keep the itemized receipt and the charge on the card. Fare/purchase must be charged entirely to the card (MR points ok, non-Amex loyalty points not).
