Wiki

Summary

Real American fashion designer (b. 1961) and the namesake of the eponymous brand. Not a singer by trade, though he does perform cabaret/Broadway. Today the brand is a licensed, mass-market label best known for QVC television shopping.

The Designer

  • Isaac Mizrahi, born Oct 14, 1961 in Brooklyn; Syrian-Jewish descent (maternal grandparents from Aleppo). Father was a children’s clothing manufacturer.
  • Studied at the High School of Performing Arts, then Parsons.
  • Launched his eponymous label in 1987 to critical acclaim; later won four CFDA awards.
  • Multi-hyphenate entertainer: subject of the 1995 documentary Unzipped, judge on Project Runway: All Stars, played Amos Hart in the Broadway revival of Chicago (2022). Self-describes as an entertainer who can sing and act — hence the occasional “is he a singer?” confusion.
  • Designs historically worn by Michelle Obama, Oprah, Meryl Streep, Rihanna, Julia Roberts, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, et al.

The Brand — Business History

  • 2003: Isaac Mizrahi for Target — one of the first high-end-designer-to-mass-retail deals. Sales tripled to >$300M over five years; made him a household name. Discontinued 2008 when he left for Liz Claiborne (that partnership lasted ~1 year).
  • 2011: Sold brand to Xcel Brands (NASDAQ: XELB) for 30M retail sales/yr.
  • 2022: Xcel sold a 70% controlling stake to WHP Global for 68M**. Xcel kept 30% and continues managing the QVC business under license.
    • WHP’s fashion vertical also includes Anne Klein, Joseph Abboud, Joe’s Jeans, William Rast.
  • Mizrahi continues as chief design officer — more the ethos/face than hands-on designer of each piece.

Scale Today

  • >$1B in cumulative retail sales since founding.
  • Annual retail sales **nearing 30M in 2011.
  • ~50 active licenses under the name.
  • Positioning: “democratization of style” — high-end design sensibility at mainstream price points.
