Reference note for NBA jersey types, brands, and how each fits this build. Originated with the Vince Carter Raptors purple throwback bought for the Ikjyot’s Wedding Bakra Party (Jul 5, “jerseys only”). Body-shape context and the general too-loose-clothing insight live in Clothing Sizing & Fit; measurements in 2025-03-22 Body Measurements.
The three jersey types
- Nike Swingman — the current/official on-court replica for active players. Smooth modern mesh, screen-printed (not sewn) names/numbers. Cut runs slimmer and shorter than Mitchell & Ness.
- Mitchell & Ness Swingman — throwback / retired-player classics (Nike doesn’t make these). Classic jersey feel, sewn-on twill names/numbers. Runs wider and a couple inches longer than the Nike Swingman. M&N’s own guidance: runs true to size, size up one for a loose fit. Note these still read as a slim/tailored cut against the body even though they’re bigger than the Nike equivalent — both statements are true, just relative to different things.
- Mitchell & Ness Authentic — premium tier, heavier, on-court construction, ~2x the price. Uses numeric sizing (40/44/48…) not S/M/L. Runs slim — size up. Not the tier bought here.
Size charts
Mitchell & Ness Swingman (garment flat measurements):
| Size | Chest (in) | Body length (in) |
|---|---|---|
| L | 46 | 30.5 |
| XL | 50 | 31.5 |
| 2XL | 54 | 32.5 |
| 3XL | 58 | 33.5 |
Nike Swingman (for comparison — runs slimmer/shorter):
| Size | Chest (in) | Length (in) |
|---|---|---|
| XL | 52 | ~29.6 |
| 2XL | 56 | ~30.4 |
Big & Tall is a distinct cut (fuller and longer through the body), not just a larger size — avoid unless a genuinely roomy fit is wanted. NBAStore.ca / Fanatics.ca stock purple Carter mostly in B&T; standard 2XL is the one to want.
Fit conclusion for this build
Apple-shaped frame, ~47–48” fullest-torso circumference (the midsection, not the chest, is the widest point — see Clothing Sizing & Fit). The garment needs to clear the midsection cleanly without billowing.
- Tried on at the NBA Store (NYC): a Nike Swingman in XXL — read slightly too big, with visible horizontal creases/folds pooling at the front and low loose armholes. Caveat: it was worn over an oversized UNIQLO tee, which exaggerated the looseness.
- Because M&N Swingman runs even wider/longer than that Nike XXL, an M&N 2XL would likely be more oversized than the Nike XXL that already looked too big — not less.
- Pre-purchase landing point (theory): for a clean drape, XL in M&N looked like the better call; 2XL only if a deliberately oversized throwback look is wanted. The mirror reaction (didn’t love the creases/folds) pointed toward the cleaner XL.
- However — the purple Carter was ultimately ordered in XL from Real Sports for the wedding deadline; trying both on in person wasn’t possible before ordering. If the fit is off, Real Sports allows returns within 60 days (unused, tags on, return shipping prepaid by buyer) — but not for personalized/customized jerseys.
⚠️ Actual fit outcome — M&N Swingman XL is too TIGHT (Jul 2026)
The XL theory didn’t hold up on the body. When it arrived, the M&N Swingman XL in the purple Carter runs too tight on this build:
- It technically fits standing still, but there’s no breathing room around the chest.
- A roll appears on the side, from the side-chest down into the waist — the front profile reads off (classic apple-build side-torso roll when a top is snug rather than clearing the midsection).
- When sitting down it completely bunches up at the waist/lap — no give.
This is the too-tight failure mode now documented in Clothing Sizing & Fit (opposite end from the billow/drape failure). Net: on the too-tight vs too-loose spectrum, the pre-order theory over-corrected toward slim. The clean-drape target for M&N Swingman on this frame is 2XL, not XL — 2XL clears the midsection, whereas XL binds it. (The earlier fear that 2XL would billow like the Nike XXL was overstated: that try-on was exaggerated by an oversized tee layered underneath.)
Decision: wore the looser Jahvid Best Lions (NFL) jersey to the Goat/Bakra Party instead — more chest room, doesn’t bunch when seated. See Ikjyot’s Wedding. Pending decision on whether to return the XL Carter (sizing is “correct” only if planning to slim down; unclear when a jersey would otherwise be worn) — leaning toward return since it’s non-personalized and within the 60-day window.
Where to buy (Canada)
- Real Sports Apparel (shop.realsports.ca) — official MLSE/Raptors store, Scotiabank Arena, downtown Toronto. Best Raptors-authentic source. Free shipping > $150 CAD within Canada; ships from St. Thomas, ON. Online orders cannot be picked up in store — delivery only, or buy in person. This is where the Carter was bought.
- NBAStore.ca / Fanatics.ca — same Fanatics catalog; purple Carter skews to Big & Tall / youth / women’s.
- Mitchell & Ness direct — full size run, ships to Canada (duties/slower).
- SportChek — tends to stock the white Carter Swingman, not purple.
