Reference note for clothing sizing and fit — body-shape context, fit learnings, and brand-specific notes. The bulk of the fit learnings and field tests come from UNIQLO (originating with the Thailand Trip wardrobe prep, May 2026), but the body-shape and fit principles apply across brands. Transaction records live in the journal entries listed under Purchase history. Body measurements live in 2025-03-22 Body Measurements; complexion-based color guidance lives in Color & Skin Tone; NBA jersey-specific sizing lives in NBA Jersey Types & Fit.
Body shape context
Apple-shaped build: larger male frame, upper body and stomach bigger than lower body. The key fit driver is a ~5” gap between the navel circumference (~47.5”) and the natural waist (~42.5”). Slim/Euro cuts don’t work; relaxed and oversized cuts in XXL are the reliable default for tops, with shorts being the problem category (see below).
Sizing cheat sheet (current defaults)
- Tops (linen shirts, AIRism tees, graphic tees): XXL
- Intentionally-oversized AIRism tees: XL
- AIRism boxer briefs: XL
- Shorts/pants: XXL — but see the chino fit caveat below
Purchase history
Transaction records (order numbers, SKUs, prices, receipts) live in journal entries; this note keeps only the fit conclusions they produced.
- 2026-05-05 UNIQLO Thailand Wardrobe Order — the main Thailand wardrobe set (linen shirts, oversized + regular AIRism tees, chino shorts). USD $410.90. Source of most fit learnings below.
- 2026-05-13 UNIQLO Bramalea In-Store Purchases — two Brampton in-store trips (AIRism tees incl. the pink long-sleeve, boxer briefs, linen pants; one return). ~CAD $259.30 net. Corrects the Thailand Trip tracker undercount.
- 2026-06-27 UNIQLO Underwear Restock Order — AIRism boxer briefs restock + NARUTO graphic tee. USD $129.20.
- 2026-07-13 UNIQLO Rotation Restock Order — four oversized tees (Brown/White/Red/Gray, XL) + black pique polo (XXL, collared-shirt test). First order screened with the HSB method in Color & Skin Tone. USD $99.50.
Fit learnings
There’s a workable window on either side of which the fit fails, and both failure modes trace back to the navel/waist differential. Too loose and fabric pools; too tight and the midsection is emphasized. Aim for the middle: clear the midsection cleanly without excess.
- Chino Shorts 8.5”, XXL — the main issue. On arrival they were uncomfortable at the navel but loose at the natural waist. This is the direct consequence of the navel-vs-waist gap: sizing up to clear the navel leaves the waistband gapping. Flat-waistband shorts are a poor match for this build; elastic/drawstring or adjustable waists handle the gap far better.
- Tops in XXL relaxed / oversized cuts work well. Premium Linen and AIRism lines in XXL (and XL for the intentionally-oversized tee) sit correctly. AIRism is the right call for hot/humid climates (cooling, sweat-wicking).
- Too big — the billow/drape failure. Same root cause as the chino-shorts problem, just up top: because the midsection is the widest point, going up a size to clear it leaves excess fabric through the chest, shoulders, and sides, which then pools into horizontal creases and folds and gapes at the armholes. Observed directly trying on an oversized basketball jersey (XXL) over an oversized tee — it read sloppy, not relaxed. Practical rule: size a top to clear the midsection, not to swim in it; and watch for stacking two oversized layers (oversized tee under an oversized top compounds the effect). When a clean drape matters, drop a size from the maximally-oversized pick. See NBA Jersey Types & Fit for the jersey-specific worked example.
- Too tight — the front-profile failure. The opposite end, and the one that shows up in photos and when seated. A top/jersey that’s snug rather than clearing the midsection throws the front profile off: with no breathing room around the chest, the fabric pulls across and a roll appears on the side, running from the side of the chest down into the waist (the classic side-torso roll on an apple build). It also leaves no give when sitting down — the fabric rides up and completely bunches at the waist/lap the moment you sit, which looks worse seated than standing. Diagnosed directly on the Vince Carter M&N Swingman XL: it technically “fits” standing and still, but there’s no chest breathing room, the side-chest-to-waist roll is visible, and it bunches when seated. Practical rule: if a top has no ease at the chest, shows a side roll, or bunches on sitting, it’s too tight regardless of whether it “closes” — size up or pick a roomier garment. The looser Jahvid Best Lions jersey was chosen over it for the Goat Party for exactly these reasons.
- The “T/L” Brampton receipt item is the AIRism Cotton T-Shirt | Long Sleeve (Uniqlo U, Pink) — originally misread as a “longer length” variant; corrected 2026-07-13. The $5 premium over the short-sleeve matches the long-sleeve line. As a regular AIRism (light, clingy fabric), it’s a layering/base-layer piece, and its light pink (86–90% B) reinforces that role — not a standalone hot-weather shirt.
- Color palette landed on: olive, navy, brown, striped brown, dark green, light gray. Earth tones and darks align with what flatters the complexion — see Color & Skin Tone for the Fitzpatrick IV / olive palette guidance.
- Watch for duplicate buys. The May 15 trip involved returning an AIRism cotton T already owned. Cross-check this note’s inventory before re-ordering staples.
Post-trip field test (Thailand, May–Jun 2026)
Real-world wear notes after using this wardrobe in hot, humid conditions:
- Linen didn’t solve the sweat problem. Despite being more breathable, linen still soaked through with profuse/easy sweating, and it shows sweat readily. Breathability ≠ sweat concealment.
- Darker colors hide sweat far better. Dark green/olive and brown disguised sweat marks; lighter shades (light gray, beige, the striped brown) showed it much more. Prioritize dark colors for anything worn standalone in heat.
- Best-received pieces: the dark green/olive full-sleeve and the brown half-sleeve both drew good feedback when worn.
- Never wore the striped brown Premium Linen Shirt — felt too thin and didn’t complement well. Effectively a miss; don’t re-buy that style/weight.
- Oversized tees were the standout. Per Ikjyot’s feedback, despite a tendency to default to collared shirts, the simple oversized tees look best — flattering shaping on this build, and the heavier fabric/quality felt and looked better. Key takeaway: lean into oversized tees over collared shirts. Important product distinction: this praise applies to the AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt | Half-Sleeve (XL) — despite the AIRism name, it’s the heavier, structured cut with the good drape. Do not confuse it with the regular AIRism Cotton T (next bullet).
- Regular AIRism Cotton T (XXL) underperformed as a standalone shirt. This is the lighter-fabric, regular-fit line — it contorts and clings to the body in unflattering ways versus the heavier Oversized line above. Better deployed as undershirts / moisture base layers than as outerwear. (Clarified 2026-07-13: earlier wording said “AIRism tees” generically, which wrongly implicated the Oversized tee too.)
- Linen wrinkles constantly — needed frequent pressing/ironing on the trip. Higher maintenance than expected.
Net conclusion for future UNIQLO buys
- Favor heavier-material oversized tees — more flattering, easier to maintain, hides sweat, looks better than collared shirts on this frame. The AIRism Cotton Oversized T-Shirt (XL) qualifies — it’s the standalone-top workhorse.
- Buy regular AIRism Cotton Ts (and/or sleeveless moisture-wicking workout tops) as undershirts/base layers, not standalone tops. Should have bought more for this purpose.
- Default to dark colors for anything worn on its own in heat (this also aligns with the flattering palette — see Color & Skin Tone).
- Still happy with UNIQLO overall and would shop again — just shift the mix toward heavier fabrics.
- Liked the AIRism boxer briefs enough to restock (see June 27 order).
Open follow-ups
- Stock up on heavier-material oversized tees in dark colors as the go-to standalone top.
- Buy AIRism tees and/or sleeveless moisture-wicking workout tops specifically as undershirt base layers.
- For future shorts/pants, prioritize adjustable or elastic waistbands over flat-front chinos to accommodate the navel/waist differential.
- Re-measure before the next significant clothing order; current figures date to March 2025.
